Fundamental Basketball Academy will put a strong emphasis on basic fundamentals. We will pay special attention to the mental and physical aspects of the game of basketball. The academy director is Rick Walrond, a verteran coach with over 30 years experience as a player and coach. The all-time winningest coach at the University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie, Warlond is a strong believer in fundamentals.
The Director
The Academy Director is Rick Walrond, a veteran with over 30 years experience as a player and coach. Coach Walrond has played and coached at every level–high school, college and professional. His professional career includes five years in Sweden as a player/Coach.
“My goal is to prepare young and aspiring players to compete and acquire a better understanding of the game of basketball. Basketball is mental as well as physical.” Coach Walrond believes that basketball becomes much more enjoyable when the mastery of basic skills take place. For the last six years, Coach Walrond has been a Division I coach at Stetson University and Bethune-Cookman College.

Important Reminders Academy Students
I. Always play in an athletic position
II. Communicate with teammates by talking
III. Show hands (target)
IV. Lay-ups – high jump not broad jump
V. Move your feet – step slide – keep a wide base
VI. Reach for the front of the rim – follow-through should be up and over
VII. In and out dribble – right to left and left to right
VIII. Take ball to the front of the rim
IX. Dribble two balls - head up and stay in athletic position
X. Use screens (1) curl (2) back cut (3) fade
XI. Good passers make good shooters – Shot preparation
XII. Defensive stance – head is center of gravity
XIII. Crossover dribble – make sure to keep ball as low as possible
